1.1811 Hollywood Jews and Hester Street Jews: Image and Reality.
In the stories of Abraham Reisin, "The Contribution", " Save Your Dimes" and "The Trial" not everything is how it looks on the surface. Behind the shiny image of a film or a parade there lurks a darker reality. This is something that the old Hollywood moguls would have comprehended perfectly since they in many respects created the image. In Simcha Jacobovici's film: Hollywoodism: Hollywood and the Jews based on Neal Gabler's book, the central idea is that a bunch of impoverished Jewish immigrants created the American Dream and then proceeded to build the Hollywood machine that manufactured it. 2 pgs. 5 f/c. 0b.

4.1843 Jews Without Money and Uncle Moses: New York at the Turn of the Century.
Mike Gold and Sholem Asch were contemporaries but worlds apart. Gold, born on the Lower East Side in New York City was pure American while Asch remained a European whose concerns were more with the Jewish shtetl than the tenements of Gold's world. Their paths crossed, however, in the subjects of Gold's autobiographical novel, Jews Without Money and of the film, Uncle Moses, based on Asch's novel. While Gold's work is mainly anecdotal as opposed to the rather histrionic drama of the film, both examine the disparity between the old world and the new, the politics of strikes and socialism that were brewing at the time and both also celebrate the tremendous strength of the Jewish community. 5 pgs. 8 f/c. 2b.

5.2280 The Arabs in Israel.
The Arabs in Israel belong to the larger Palestinian/Arab community, but instrumentally, they belong to Israel as their state of citizenship where they must have their daily needs met. While they enjoy a range of rights, they do not have equal rights with Jews since Israel is a state of the Jewish people. Discrimination against the Palestinian citizens has been reconciled with Israeli democracy on the basis that the Palestinians are a potential threat to the security of the state. 11.5 pgs. 9 f/c. 10b.
