This four-page undergraduate paper examines the Civil
Rights Movement of the nineteen-sixties. The author
notes that this Movement originated in the late nineteen-fifties
when African-Americans began organized efforts to
obtain equality in education, voting, housing, employment,
and other areas of American society. Throughout the
nineteen-sixties, civil rights organizers conducted
sit-ins, became freedom riders, and marched in America’s
streets to protest against racial discrimination and
prejudice. They succeeded in achieving many of their
goals and demonstrated how important social change
could be obtained through peaceful marches and civil
disobedience strategies.

The Jew Within: Self, Family, and Community in America
This five-page undergraduate paper discusses the book,
The Jew Within: Self, Family, and Community in America,
by Steven Cohen and Arnold Eisen. The authors contend
that Jews in the United States feel less attachment
to Israel than their parents and grandparents did,
are participating in traditional Jewish organizations
less than ever before, and are focused more on their
own families and careers. Ultimately, Eisen and Cohen
found that old communal loyalties and established
norms no longer shape Jewish identity as they did
several decades ago.

James Watt
James Watt has the distinction of being classified
as an inventor when in fact he did not invent the
steam engine he is famous for, he re-vamped somebody
elses. However, it can not be disputed that his modifications
to the steam engine greatly assisted in the mining
and the cotton industries. This paper tells a little
about his life, his work and what uses the steam engine
he modified were used for.

Force and Foreign Policy in the 21st Century: An Analysis
of Justification
This nine-page graduate paper examines the book, The
Illusion of Control, Force and Foreign Policy in the
21st Century, by Seyom Brown. The paper’s author discusses
Brown’s analysis that Washington is becoming increasingly
inclined to rely upon military force or the threat
of force to deal with a wide range of issues confronting
the United States around the world, particularly from
Islamic extremism. In the process, the author critiques
Brown’s position that while resorting to force may
appear to be a sound method of asserting some measure
of control over a world in turmoil, conducting foreign
policy through military prowess may in fact prove
to be a dangerous illusion.

Counterterrorism and the Erosion of Civil Liberties
This paper shall examine the extent to which the United
States government has the right to curtail liberties
outlined in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.
By considering the current powers allowed to government
agencies as well as proposed methods of expanding
that power, this paper will illustrate that any attempt
to fight terrorism cannot succeed if the extent of
the battle is waged on civil liberties. The government
already possesses wide powers for combating terrorism
but uses them ineffectively at best; the government
should not be permitted to obtain more power, especially
without the oversight of the public.
