The Breakdown of the Two-Party System: An Analysis
This seven-page undergraduate paper examines the breakdown
of the two-party system in the United States before
the Civil War. The author notes that the divisive
issue of slavery and the passion in the South for
state's rights presented the two major parties with
challenges they proved unable to overcome and led
to the breakdown of the two-party system, which became
the principle cause of the Civil War. The breakdown
of the two-party system was a slow development, but
it was accelerated during the last decade before the
Civil War by the weakness of the Whigs and the emergence
of the new Republican Party in the North.

World War II Merchant Marine: An Analysis of Veteran's
Rights
This ten-page graduate paper examines the controversial
issue of veteran status for Merchant Marine sailors
of World War II. The author notes that thousands of
United States Merchant Marine sailors served in dangerous
combat zones overseas with great dedication, distinction,
and courage during the legally defined duration of
the Second World War, but were denied veteran's rights
for decades, due to opposition from the Secretary
of the Air Force and veteran's groups such as the
VFW and American Legion.

Malcolm X: An Analysis
This three-page paper analyzes the movie, Malcolm
X, and examines how Spike Lee and Denzel Washington
portrayed the life of the slain civil rights leader.
The author also evaluates the movie's historical accuracy
and its significance, and concludes that Malcolm X
is a valuable resource, for Malcolm X's experiences
were very representative of what countless African-Americans
have experienced in their own lives. The movie is
not one-hundred percent historically accurate, mostly
because Malcolm X was a controversial figure whose
character, personality, achievements, and politics
have been interpreted differently.

The United States Merchant Marine in World War II:
A Comprehensive Review
This twelve page graduate paper examines the importance
of the United States Merchant Marine in World War
II. The author notes that merchant shipping determined
what the Allies could or could not do militarily in
World War II. When sinkings of Allied merchant vessels
exceeded production, or when slow turnarounds, convoy
delays, roundabout routing, and long voyages led to
heavy losses, the war effort suffered. Had it not
been for the mass production of Liberty and Victory
ships and the courageous service and sacrifice of
thousands of Merchant mariners, the war would have
been prolonged for months, if not for years, and may
even have been lost.

North Carolina Colonial Records: A Historical Analysis
This three-page graduate paper examines and analyzes
the colonial history of North Carolina and provides
a commentary on the colonial records of the colony.
The author notes that North Carolina's colonial records
provide a fascinating primary source for scholars
and students interested in studying the early history
of North Carolina. These records reveal in much greater
detail than most sources the social, political, religious,
and economic events that shaped North Carolina history,
and shed much needed light on North Carolina's long
colonial era.

Agriculture in the Prehistoric American Southwest
This three-page undergraduate paper examines agriculture
in the prehistoric American Southwest and analyzes
how the advent of agriculture was affected by the
desert climate. The author notes that due to dry desert
conditions, ancient peoples such as the Hohokam and
Anasazi had to dig canals or water channels to irrigate
their crops. The climate of this region was relatively
harsh and the growing season fairly short, but Anasazi
and Hohokam agriculture were generally efficient even
though they developed under the perpetual threat of
drought.
This paper uses an interview with a family member
named Richard Van Allan concerning his war service
during the Viertnam period in the 1960s to consider
how he was affected by the protests of the time and
how he was influenced by his service in the Special
Forces so that he saw Vietnam as a necessary action
in which some mistakes were made but not as an American
crime.
