Sino-American Relations and the Transcontinental Railroad
This paper examines the role that Chinese immigrant
labor played in the construction of the transcontinental
railroad in the wake of the Civil War in the United
States. The paper considers the socio-cultural forces
that brought Chinese en masse to California, the conditions
suffered by Chinese workers on the construction, and
the resulting discrimination that the Chinese faced
because of their apparent inability to be assimilated
into mainstream white culture in the United States.

How did the great depression affect the maturation
and development of the US Coast Guard
When the Coast Guard emerged from World War I, it
struggled for an identity. When it entered the Great
Depression, it struggled for funding. It was forced
to stretch its men and resources over an ever-widening
range of duties as more and more departments came
under its control (such as the Light House service).
It had a very strong role in enforcement during Prohibition,
and entered the 1930’s in a very strong law enforcement
position. However, as Commandant Hamlet would find
out, even the best of enforcement and usefulness does
not protect an agency from budget tightening . Because
of the tightening of funds, the Coast Guard was forced
to dock many of its ships, change its functions, all
the while finding an expanding role in the protection
and management of the United States’ coastline and
waterways. It is the purpose of this paper to examine
the specific effects upon the Coast Guard that the
Great Depression had.

The Unifying Effect of the French and Indian Wars
This paper briefly examines the role that expansion
played in uniting the European colonists of the New
World. Even though the period between 1660 and 1763
was framed by the brutal and bloody French and Indian
Wars, this period also marks the beginning of a colonial
identity that is separate from that of the home country.
The wars themselves are representative of that identity
development as a product of European expansion.

A Letter to Governor Rick Perry
As a citizen of the great state of Texas, I turn to
you with what I perceive as a dangerous situation.
You have established several priorities for our state,
such as strengthening educational opportunities, increasing
access to quality healthcare, improving transportation,
innovating new water sources, and improving our border
region, however what about the protecting the safety
of the citizens due to the carelessness of businesses
such as Pantex? (“Priorities”)

Revision to the Texas Constitution
The Texas Constitution is a lengthy document, some
90,000 words and approximately 400 amendments, and
it continues to grow, as more amendments are made
to it. To some, the Constitution is too democratic,
and in fact antiquated. When it was first written,
in 1875, Texans “acquired perhaps the most strictly
controlled governmental structure in the United States,
which it retains to this day.” (Murchison) But should
it be revised? And if so, how?

Massachusetts and the Constitution
This paper conssiders what sort of national constitution
the people of Massachusetts might support in 1789,
considering how it might differ from the Constitution
actually written and how it might be the same, with
the belief that in general the people of Massachusetts
would develop a constitution with many of the same
principles, based on the idea of the consent of the
governed and on direct democracy as a ruling principle.
This paper examines the role the media plays in shaping
the perceptions of the American public in relation
to the Seattle protests of globalism and the World
Trade Organization. The paper examines the proposed
goals and aims of globalism and counters that with
the concerns and rhetoric of the protestors. Finally
the media representation of the protests will be examined
in order to shed light on the manner in which our
perceptions of the protests have been influenced.
